Every other trade builds a tool bag around capacity and weight. Plumbing has a third constraint that dominates both: the kit gets wet, and some of what it gets wet with is actively corrosive. Drain water is not clean water. Flux is designed to attack oxide layers. Cutting oil, pipe dope, primer and cement all migrate into fabric and stay there.

The method here is the same weight-budgeted approach used for the electrician's bag, with moisture management layered on top.

Set the weight budget first

Plumbing tools are dense. A single 18 in (457 mm) aluminum pipe wrench is around 4.5 lb (2 kg), and its steel equivalent is closer to 7 lb (3.2 kg). A plumbing bag reaches its weight limit long before it reaches its volume limit, which is the opposite of an electrician's bag.

OSHA sets no numeric limit and treats lifting hazards under the general duty clause, so the ceiling is a decision you make and enforce.

The wet-tool problem

A soft tool bag is a sponge with pockets. Three separate mechanisms turn a wet call into permanent damage.

  1. Wicking. Untreated woven fabric draws water up the base by capillary action. A bag standing in half an inch of water on a basement floor is wet to the third pocket ring within minutes.   2. Retention. Coated fabrics hold water against the tools they contain rather than releasing it. A PVC-lined pocket that keeps rain out also keeps a wet wrench wet. Drain grommets in the base of a wet-side container matter more than waterproofing.
  3. Chemistry. Flux residue, cutting oil and drain contents soak into the weave and are not removed by drying. Soldering fluxes are formulated to strip oxide, and residues that are not water flushable persist. ASTM B813 exists precisely because flux corrosivity had to be bounded, and it requires residues to be soluble in cold and hot water. A bag pocket that has held open flux is a corrosion source for everything you put in it afterward.

The hard case plus soft bag split

This is why the trade converged on running two containers, and it is a genuine engineering split rather than a habit.

A gasketed hard case is not for keeping water out on a plumbing job. It is for keeping water and contamination in, contained, until you can deal with it. That inverts the usual reason to buy a sealed box, and it changes what matters on the spec: gasket chemical compatibility, a smooth wipeable interior with no fabric or foam, and latch strength. Splitting to budget

  • Van only (hand auger, hole saws, test gauge): 13.2 lb removed. Remaining: about 41.8 lb.
  • Wet-side hard case (closet auger, pipe wrenches, basin wrench, cutters, deburring tool, torch, case): about 19.8 lb. This gets carried by the other hand, or on a second trip.
  • Dry-side soft bag (everything else plus consumables): about 22 lb loaded.

Separating consumables from tools

Consumables in plumbing are chemically active. Solder is soft and sheds. Flux is a paste designed to be aggressive. Primer and cement are solvents that attack plastics, including the polypropylene some organizers are molded from. PTFE tape unspools and gets everywhere.

Rules that hold up:

  • Sealed rigid container for wet chemistry. Flux, cement, primer and cutting oil live in one small screw-top or gasketed box that never opens inside the soft bag. If it leaks, it leaks into a container you can wash.

  • Never store solder against steel. Lead-free solder alloys in contact with steel in a humid enclosure create a galvanic couple. Keep the solder coil in its own bag.
  • Date the cement. Solvent cements have a shelf life and thicken in the can. A dedicated consumables container makes it possible to actually rotate stock instead of finding a three year old can at the bottom of a bag.

The decontamination routine

Run this at the end of any call that involved drain water, standing water or flux. The whole sequence is five minutes and it is the single highest-return habit in the trade. Flash rust can begin within hours on freshly wetted bare steel, so the same-day part is not optional.

  1. Segregate at the job. Contaminated tools go into the hard case, not back into pockets. Do not put a wet auger into a fabric bag "just for the drive back."
  2. Rinse. Hose or rinse the hard case contents. Sewage and drain contents are the contaminant; plain water removes most of it. Use a mild detergent for grease.
  3. Mechanically dry. Towel, then compressed air if you have it. Blow out jaw pivots, ratchet mechanisms, cutter wheel axles, spring cavities and any blind hole. Trapped water in a pivot is what actually kills tools; the outside surface is easy.
  4. Displace. A water-displacing penetrating fluid into every pivot and mechanism. This is a displacement step, not a lubrication step, and it is different from the protective coating in step 5.
  5. Coat. A light film of a corrosion-preventive oil or a wax-based protectant on bare steel surfaces. Wipe off the excess so the tool is not a dirt magnet.
  6. Store open, then close. Leave the case open until everything is dry to the touch. Only then close it. If the case must be closed while contents are marginal, add a vapor corrosion inhibitor emitter, which releases a compound into the enclosed air space that passivates exposed metal surfaces.   7. Inspect the bag. Look for staining and stiffness in the fabric, which is where flux or oil has soaked in. Cut out or replace affected pockets rather than living with them.

Service kit versus rough-in kit

These are different jobs with different tool sets, and combining them is the most common way a plumbing kit becomes a 60 lb container that nobody wants to lift.

What goes wrong

The bag becomes the wet side. The single most common failure. Once someone puts a wet auger in the soft bag "just this once," the discipline is gone and the fabric is a corrosion source from then on.

Closing a sealed case on wet contents. A gasket that keeps water out also keeps humidity in. This turns a good case into the worst possible storage environment.

Buying a waterproof bag instead of a wipeable case. Waterproof fabric solves rain, which is not the plumbing problem. The plumbing problem is contamination that has already entered the container, and fabric cannot be cleaned.

Carrying the drain equipment. Augers and drain machines are the densest single items in the kit and are needed on a minority of calls. They belong in the vehicle until the diagnosis says otherwise.

Skipping the inspection step. Corrosion in a jaw pivot or a ratchet is invisible until the tool binds. Once a week, open and work every mechanism in the wet-side case. Why do plumbers use a hard case and a soft bag together?

Because the two halves of the kit have opposite requirements. Wet, greasy and chemically contaminated items need a wipeable, sealed, drainable container. Dry hand tools and consumables need pockets and visibility. One container cannot do both well.

How do I stop tools rusting after a drain call?

Dry them mechanically the same day. Wipe, blow out cavities with compressed air, displace remaining water with a penetrating water-displacing fluid, then coat and store. Corrosion starts within hours on bare steel, so timing matters more than the product you use.
