Nearly every comparison of these systems puts published weight capacities in a table and declares a winner. That table is meaningless, because the brands are not publishing the same number. Fix that first and the rest of the decision becomes tractable.
The load rating problem nobody mentions
Milwaukee publishes a single "weight capacity" per item: 75 lb for a medium Packout box, 100 lb for a large. DeWalt publishes a single "load capacity": 110 lb for its small and large boxes, 123 lb for the extra large. Neither states whether that number is contents, stacked load, carry load, or all three.
Festool and Tanos publish three separate figures for every Systainer3:
- In-box load, 20 kg (44 lb) for M and L bodies, 40 kg (88 lb) for XXL, 5 kg (11 lb) for the small S boxes.
- Connected load, 40 kg (88 lb) for M and L, 80 kg (176 lb) for XXL, meaning what the coupled joint will carry.
- Lid load, 100 kg (220 lb) across the M, L and XXL range, meaning what can sit on top.
Bosch does the same on L-BOXX: 25 kg (55 lb) in the box, 100 kg (220 lb) on the lid, 50 kg (110 lb) tensile.
The honest conclusion is that per-box load ratings should not decide this purchase. Use them within a brand to rank boxes, not across brands to rank systems.

Worth knowing: Keter is not purely a competitor here. Keter Plastic Ltd appears as a joint assignee with Milwaukee Electric Tool on granted patents covering the storage device coupling interface, which is the mechanism at the heart of Packout. Read that as evidence of shared development on the connector, not as a claim about where any given box is molded. The polymer itself is not what separates these systems.
Normalized volume, the number that actually differs
Internal volume per unit of stack height is the metric that changes how a van packs out. Because the Systainer catalogue publishes internal volume directly, and DeWalt and Milwaukee publish internal dimensions on some boxes, the arithmetic is available.

Two real findings fall out of that.
The Systainer format is materially more space-efficient. It has no external cleats, a flat lid, thinner impact structure and a single central latch instead of two side latches plus front hardware. That geometry buys 15 to 30 percentage points of efficiency over the American jobsite systems. The trade is exactly what you would expect: less external structure to survive a drop from a scaffold.
Depth is the biggest lever inside any system. A ToughSystem DWST08300 is 60 percent efficient while its shallow sibling is 50 percent, because wall thickness is fixed overhead spread over more volume. The same pattern holds for Systainer, where an M 137 is 65 percent and an M 437 reaches the high 80s. If van height is your constraint, buy deep boxes and accept the digging.
Cost per usable liter
Price per box tells you nothing. Price per liter of usable internal volume tells you a lot, and it reverses several assumptions. Using observed US street listings in late 2025 and 2026, and dividing by published internal volume:

The pattern is stable even when the prices move: the premium European system is competitive or cheaper per liter at the large end, and the shallow American box is the most expensive storage in the category. People buy shallow boxes and organizers because they are convenient and because the sticker looks small. Per liter, they are the worst value in every system.
Water resistance claims, and one that is missing
Four of the nine systems publish IP65. Under IEC 60529 that is dust tight plus protection against water jets from a 6.3 mm nozzle at about 12.5 L/min. It is not immersion, which is IPX7, and not high-pressure jets, which is IPX6.
Three cautions:
- DeWalt publishes the qualifier the others leave implicit. Its wording is that the rating applies with the lid closed and latches locked upright. That is true of every gasketed box on this list.
- Milwaukee does not claim IP65 across the whole Packout catalog. The crate has deliberate weep holes, the drawer boxes make no claim, and the rolling tool chest is described only as having water and debris protection.
- Festool and Tanos publish no IP number at all. The wording is that contents are protected against dust, splash water and temperature change. That is weaker than an IP65 claim in specificity, not necessarily in performance, but if a numeric rating matters to you contractually, Systainer3 does not give you one. Ecosystem lock-in, costed honestly
This is the part the brands do not discuss. Only the Systainer lineage interlocks across manufacturers, so Makita MAKPAC, Metabo metaBOX and Mafell cases stack with Festool and Tanos boxes. Put numbers on the switch:
The asymmetry is what makes the decision consequential. Boxes are liquid, accessories are not, and the accessory catalog is exactly where each brand tries to win you. That argues for buying structure first and accessories late in every system, and it argues for treating the first purchase as a platform decision rather than a box purchase.
Who should buy which
Electricians and low-voltage. Small parts dominate. Packout has the deepest bin, organizer and tote catalog, and the compact footprint boxes carry one-handed up a ladder. If you work a lot of European brand tools, Systainer3 Organizers do the same job with better volumetric efficiency.
Plumbers and HVAC service. Wet, heavy, truck-based. Both IP65 systems are appropriate. Pick ToughSystem 2.0 if van floor space is tight, since its plan footprint is about 13 percent smaller per box. Pick Packout if you want the cooler, 2-wheel cart and 400 lb hauling options in the same catalog.

Fleet and shop managers. Standardize on whatever is stocked in every market you operate in, which in North America means Packout or ToughSystem. Cross-brand elegance is worth less than being able to replace a cracked box the same week from any supply house.
The four mistakes that cost the most
- Comparing published weight capacities across brands. They measure different things. Compare footprint, internal volume and cost per liter instead.
- Buying organizers before boxes. Organizers are the least volume-efficient and most expensive item per liter in every catalog, and they are cargo, not structure.
- Reading IP65 as waterproof. It is a jet rating on a correctly closed, new box, and it is not claimed on every product in any lineup.
- Assuming similar-looking boxes share a footprint. Systainer is 396 x 296 mm and L-BOXX is 442 x 357 mm. They look alike in photographs and will never stack.
