Packout is not one box. It is a coupling standard plus roughly a hundred parts that share it, and almost every buying mistake in the system comes from misreading which parts actually carry load and which parts are just along for the ride.
How the coupling actually works
Every stackable Packout item has the same two features. The top surface carries raised cleats with an undercut profile. The bottom surface carries matching channels. You set a box down, slide it forward roughly 20 mm until the cleats seat, then rotate the two red side latches down over hooks on the box below.
Two consequences follow from that geometry, and they explain most of the system's behavior:
- The joint is a shear-and-hook joint, not a clamp. Vertical separation is resisted by the latches. Horizontal shear is resisted by the cleats. Neither one preloads the stack, so a Packout tower has a small amount of rock in it that never goes away.
- Coupling is defined by the cleat pattern, not the outer wall. The Packout Organizer is 19.7 in (500 mm) wide, noticeably narrower than the 22.1 in tool boxes, yet it latches to them because the cleats sit on the same centers. That is why Packout looks dimensionally inconsistent on a shelf but works fine in a stack.

The IP65 claim, and the four things it does not cover
Milwaukee's wording on the rigid boxes is an "IP65 rated weather seal." Under IEC 60529 the two digits mean:
- 6, dust tight. No ingress of dust at all, verified in a talc chamber with the enclosure at reduced internal pressure.
- 5, protected against water jets. A 6.3 mm nozzle delivering about 12.5 L/min from 2.5 to 3 m, for at least 3 minutes, with no harmful ingress.
That is a genuinely useful rating for a box that sits in a truck bed in rain. It is not what most buyers assume. Four gaps matter:
- It is not an immersion rating. Immersion is IPX7 or IPX8 and is not claimed anywhere in Packout. A box that floats in a flooded trench is not a box that stays dry in one.
- It is not a pressure washing rating. That would be IPX6, a 12.5 mm nozzle at roughly 100 L/min. Aiming a jobsite pressure washer at a Packout lid seam is outside the test envelope.
- It applies only to the closed, correctly latched box. The seal is a compressed elastomer bead. It does nothing when the lid is ajar because a tape measure is fouling the gasket, and it degrades as the bead takes a compression set from being stored closed under load for years.
- It is not claimed on every item. The crate has deliberate weep holes. The drawer boxes make no IP claim. Neither does the rolling tool chest, which Milwaukee describes only as having "water and debris protection." If your reason for buying Packout is water, the drawer units and the chest are the wrong products.

Weight budget: what a loaded stack really weighs
This is the arithmetic most buying guides skip, and it decides whether Packout works for you.
Two conclusions fall straight out of that:
A fully rated Packout stack is a rolling load, not a carrying load. The NIOSH revised lifting equation uses a load constant of 51 lb (23 kg) as the maximum for a two-handed lift under ideal conditions, and real multipliers for asymmetry, height and grip typically pull the recommended limit well below that. A large tool box loaded to its own 100 lb rating is roughly double the ideal-case constant for one person, with a wide grip span and no way to keep it close to the body. The rating describes what the plastic survives, not what a human should pick up.
Stairs break the model. A stack that rolls beautifully across a slab has to be decoupled and carried one box at a time up a flight, which is exactly when the per-box weight matters. If your work is walk-ups, service calls and finished interiors, build around medium boxes at 75 lb rated and compact boxes you can carry one-handed, not around XL boxes.
The wall mounting number is the trap. The Packout Mounting Plate is rated 100 lb floor mounted and 50 lb wall mounted. A Large Tool Box weighs 12.2 lb empty and is rated for 100 lb of contents. Wall mount that box, fill it to its own rating, and you are at roughly 112 lb hanging off a plate rated for 50. Same story on the racking kit, whose shelves are rated 50 lb each. Use wall plates for organizers, bags and light boxes. Put heavy boxes on the floor, on a dolly, or on a bolted rack you have rated yourself.
Mounting to vans and trucks
The mounting plate has metal-reinforced fastener holes on 16 in (406 mm) centers, which is stud spacing and also the spacing of most van wall ribs. That is the intended path: bolt plates to a plywood-backed wall or a bolted steel rack, then dock boxes to the plates.
Three things to get right:
- Back the plate. A 3.3 lb polymer plate on sheet metal will pull through. Sandwich a plywood or steel backer and use fender washers or rivnuts, not sheet metal screws into a rib.
- Rate the rack, not the plate. The 50 lb wall figure is the plate's own limit. Your rack has its own limit, and both are below what a full stack weighs. Heavy boxes belong on the floor with a tie-down through the mounting plate's metal-reinforced tie-down points.
- Treat crash loads seriously. A 100 lb box in a 30 mph stop is a multi-hundred pound projectile. Latches are not restraints. The full treatment, including load path and fastener selection, is in mounting modular boxes in a van.
A buying order that does not waste money
The system rewards buying structure first and organization last.
- One wheeled base. Rolling Tool Box if you mostly move a two or three box stack, 2-Wheel Cart if you also haul material, Dolly if the stack lives in a shop and only occasionally moves. The base is the single most load-bearing purchase and the one people put off.
- One large or XL box for the cordless kit that goes everywhere. This is the box that justifies the system.
- One medium box for hand tools. Shallow beats deep for hand tools, because a 6.6 in deep box you can see into is faster than an 11.1 in box you have to dig through.
- Only now, organizers. Buy them to solve a specific small-parts problem you have already identified. Buying four organizers on day one is the classic Packout overspend.
- Wall plates or racking last, once the kit has stabilized and you know what actually stays in the van.

What Packout does badly
Honest limitations, because the marketing will not list them:
- Volumetric efficiency is mediocre. Thick walls, molded cleats, corner reinforcement and a gasket channel all eat interior space. Packout boxes are physically larger than their contents suggest, and a stack wastes height at every joint. Systems that use a shallower coupling get more liters per external liter.
- Organizers are expensive per liter. They are the most-bought and least space-efficient item in the catalog.
- No drawer unit is sealed. If you want drawers and weather protection in the same product, Packout does not offer it.
- The stack has rock in it. Because the joint hooks rather than clamps, a tall tower flexes and, on a rough surface with a heavy top box, wants to walk. Heavy items belong low, which is standard practice but matters more here than in clamped systems.
- Lock-in is real and one-directional. Nothing else latches to Packout, so every accessory purchase deepens the commitment. That is a fair trade for the catalog breadth, but it should be a decision rather than an accident. The short decision test
Buy Packout if you need the widest accessory catalog in the category, you move tools on wheels more than you carry them up stairs, and you value availability at any big-box store over volumetric efficiency. Choose something else if your work is stair-heavy walk-ups, if you need sealed drawers, or if you are optimizing usable liters per dollar rather than ecosystem breadth.
