5052 aluminum Materials

Also called: 5052-H32

An aluminum magnesium alloy with good formability and marine grade corrosion resistance, widely used for truck tool box bodies. It is not heat treatable, so strength comes from work hardening rather than aging.

A

Aluminum tread plate Materials

Also called: diamond plate, checker plate

Aluminum sheet with a raised pattern rolled into one face, used on truck boxes for stiffness, grip and dent tolerance. The pattern hides damage well and adds very little strength on its own.

ANSI/BHMA Standards

Also called: BHMA grading, ANSI grade

The American National Standards Institute and Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association grading system for locks and hardware, running Grade 1 to Grade 3. It rates cycles, strength and finish, and it applies to door hardware more than to tool box locks.

Anti-pry lip Security

Also called: pry resistant lip, return flange

A folded steel edge on a lid or door that overlaps the body, removing the gap a pry bar needs to get purchase. It costs almost nothing to form and defeats the most common forced entry method.

Anti-tip mechanism Chests and cabinets

Also called: drawer interlock, single drawer interlock

A linkage that allows only one drawer to open at a time, or a latch that stops upper drawers opening while a heavy lower drawer is out. It exists specifically to keep the tipping moment inside safe limits.

Assortment case Organization

Also called: parts case, compartment case

A flat case divided by fixed or movable partitions for fasteners and small components. Movable dividers only help if the case has enough molded slots, otherwise parts migrate between compartments in transit.

ASTM F883 Standards

Also called: padlock standard

The ASTM performance specification for padlocks, defining size classes and test methods for attack resistance including cutting, prying, pulling and impact. It is the standard behind most padlock security claims.

Auto-connect Modular systems

Also called: self-aligning stacking, drop and lock

A coupling style where lowering a box onto the one below engages the latches automatically, without a separate turn or slide. It speeds loading a van but makes accidental partial engagement harder to notice.

B

Ball bearing slide Chests and cabinets

Also called: ball slide, precision slide

A drawer slide using caged steel balls running between nested raceways. It gives low friction, full extension travel and far higher load ratings than roller or friction slides, at the cost of width, weight and price.

Ballistic nylon Materials

Also called: ballistic weave, 2x2 basket weave

A thick nylon fabric in a 2 by 2 basket weave, originally developed for flak jackets. It resists tearing and puncture better than plain weave of the same denier but takes coatings less readily.

Bed rail Truck and jobsite

Also called: bed side rail

The top edge of a pickup bed side, which carries the mounting clamps for a crossover box. Rail width and any stake pocket positions determine which mounting hardware will actually work.

Bed rail height Truck and jobsite

Also called: rail height

The vertical distance from the bed floor to the top of the bed rail. It sets the maximum height of a chest box under a cover and the usable depth of a crossover box hanging into the bed.

Bin cup Organization

Also called: parts bin, insert box

A small removable container that drops into a compartment organizer to hold fasteners or fittings. Cups let you carry one size to the job without taking the whole organizer.

Brinelling Chests and cabinets

Also called: raceway denting, false brinelling

Permanent indentation of a bearing raceway where a ball has been pressed into the steel by overload or impact. On drawer slides it shows up as notchy, rough travel long before any part actually breaks.

Butcher block top Chests and cabinets

Also called: hardwood top, wood work surface

A laminated hardwood work surface fitted to a roller cabinet in place of a steel or composite top. It resists dents and takes a clamp well, but absorbs solvent and swells if left wet.

C

Cam lock Security

Also called: cabinet lock, quarter turn lock

A cylinder with a flat metal arm on its back that rotates behind a frame or into a slot. It is the cheapest way to lock a drawer or door, and the cam is usually the weakest part.

Cantilever box Portable boxes and bags

Also called: cantilever tool box, fishing style box

A hand-carry box whose trays swing outward and upward on linked arms as the lid opens, presenting every tray at once. It gives excellent visibility but poor sealing and a high empty weight per liter.

Caster Chests and cabinets

Also called: wheel

A wheel assembly bolted to the base of a mobile cabinet. Diameter, tread material and mounting type set rolling resistance over cords and thresholds, and the published rating is per caster, not per cabinet.

Caster load rating Chests and cabinets

Also called: wheel capacity

The published static load one caster can carry. Dividing total cabinet weight by four is optimistic, because floor slope and uneven loading regularly put more than half the load on two of the four casters.

Center of gravity Chests and cabinets

Also called: CG, centre of mass

The point where the mass of a loaded cabinet effectively acts. Loading heavy tools into upper drawers raises it, and a higher center of gravity means less lateral tilt is needed before the cabinet goes over.

Chest box Truck and jobsite

Also called: truck chest, hopper box

A truck box that sits on the bed floor rather than the rails, with a top opening lid. It keeps sight lines clear over the cab and works with a tonneau or a low bed rail height.

Closed cell foam Organization

Also called: non-absorbent foam

Foam whose gas cells are sealed from each other, so the material does not soak up liquid. It is used for gaskets and tool pockets because oil, coolant and water sit on the surface instead of wicking in.

Cold rolled steel Materials

Also called: CRS, cold reduced steel

Sheet steel rolled to final thickness below its recrystallization temperature, giving tight thickness tolerance, a smooth surface and higher yield strength than hot rolled. It is the standard body material for tool chests.

Compression set Materials

Also called: permanent set

The fraction of thickness a gasket or foam fails to recover after being held compressed, usually measured to ASTM D395. High compression set is how an old lid gasket stops sealing while still looking intact.

Cordura Materials

Also called: Cordura nylon

A brand of air-jet textured nylon fabric known for abrasion resistance, commonly used in tool bags at 500D to 1680D. The name marks a licensed specification, not a single fabric weight or coating.

Coupling Modular systems

Also called: interlock, latching

The mechanism that joins one modular box to the one below so the stack moves as a single unit. Coupling strength, published by some makers as a tensile figure, decides whether a stack survives being lifted by the top box.

Cross-brand compatibility Modular systems

Also called: cross compatibility, mixed stacking

The degree to which boxes from different systems will physically couple. Shared footprints allow flat stacking or third-party adapters, but latch geometry rarely matches, so most mixed stacks rely on straps or adapter plates.

Cross-linked polyethylene foam Organization

Also called: XLPE foam, cross-linked PE

A closed cell foam whose polymer chains are chemically bonded across each other, giving a fine even cell structure that cuts cleanly and resists solvents and oil. It is the standard material for cut tool pockets.

Crossover box Truck and jobsite

Also called: cross bed box, saddle box

A truck tool box that spans the bed side to side just behind the cab, resting on both bed rails. It is the most common pickup box and the easiest to fit, but it consumes prime bed space.

D

Denier Materials

Also called: den, linear mass density

The mass in grams of 9,000 metres of a fibre or yarn. Higher denier means a thicker yarn and usually a tougher fabric, but weave and coating matter as much as the number on the label.

Desiccant Materials

Also called: silica gel, drying agent

A material that adsorbs water vapor, lowering humidity inside a sealed box. It saturates and must be regenerated by heating, and it does nothing at all in an enclosure that leaks air freely.

Dolly Modular systems

Also called: platform truck, rollerboard

A flat wheeled platform that a modular stack latches onto, adding mobility without adding storage. Dollies keep stack height lower than a rolling base but usually have smaller wheels and worse behavior on gravel.

Drawer box Chests and cabinets

Also called: drawer shell

The five-sided container that rides on the slides, usually formed from folded sheet steel with a welded or riveted front. Its stiffness, not the slide rating, is often the true limit on how much a drawer can hold.

Drawer liner Organization

Also called: tool box liner, drawer mat

A sheet placed in the bottom of a drawer to grip tools, damp noise and protect paint. Common materials are foam PVC, thermoplastic elastomer, rubber and closed cell foam, each with different oil resistance.

Drawer weight distribution Chests and cabinets

Also called: load planning

The practice of assigning tools to drawers by mass so that heavy items sit low and near the cabinet centerline. Good distribution lowers the center of gravity and reduces slide wear on the outermost drawers.

Durometer Materials

Also called: Shore hardness

A hardness scale for rubbers and elastomers, most often Shore A. Lower numbers grip and cushion better, higher numbers resist cut and permanent set, which is the tradeoff in any drawer liner choice.

Dynamic load Standards

Also called: shock load, impact load

A load applied with motion, such as a drawer slammed shut or a box dropped into a truck bed. Acceleration multiplies the effective force, so a dynamic event can far exceed a component's static rating.

E

E-coat Materials

Also called: electrocoat, electrophoretic primer

A primer deposited from a water bath by electric current, reaching recesses and seams that spray cannot. Used under powder coating on better cabinets, it substantially improves corrosion life at edges.

EVA foam Organization

Also called: ethylene vinyl acetate foam

A closed cell foam that is softer and more elastic than cross-linked polyethylene, common in die-cut case inserts and drawer liners. It grips tools well but tears more easily along a hand-cut edge.

F

Five S Organization

Also called: 5S, sort set shine standardize sustain

A workplace organization method with five steps: sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain. Most shop drawer layout advice is a restatement of the second step applied to a tool box.

Flash rust Materials

Also called: surface rust, light corrosion

The thin orange film that forms on bare steel within hours of exposure to moisture. It is cosmetic at first but roughens the surface, which then holds more moisture and accelerates deeper pitting.

Footprint Modular systems

Also called: base dimension, system width

The shared plan dimensions that every unit in a modular system uses, so boxes align when stacked. Festool and Metabo both use a 396 mm wide footprint, which is why several third-party lids interchange.

French cleat Shop storage

Also called: cleat wall, 45 degree cleat

A wall storage method using paired strips bevelled at 45 degrees, one fixed to the wall and one on the holder. Gravity pulls the holder into the wall, and load capacity is set by the wall fixings.

Friction slide Chests and cabinets

Also called: wood-on-wood slide, plain slide

A drawer support that slides metal on metal or plastic on metal with no rolling elements. Cheap and thin, it binds under side load and typically limits travel to about three quarters of drawer depth.

Full extension Chests and cabinets

Also called: 100 percent extension

A slide travel class in which the drawer box clears the cabinet front completely, exposing the entire drawer interior. It requires a three-member slide and shifts the load further from the cabinet, raising the tipping moment.

Furring strip Shop storage

Also called: batten, strapping

A thin wood strip fixed to a wall to create a mounting plane and an air gap. Furring gives pegboard its standoff and gives cleats and panels something solid to land on between studs.

G

Galvanic corrosion Materials

Also called: dissimilar metal corrosion, bimetallic corrosion

Accelerated corrosion where two different metals touch in the presence of an electrolyte, and the less noble metal dissolves. It is why steel fasteners in an aluminum truck box need isolation or a compatible plating.

Galvanizing Materials

Also called: zinc coating, hot dip galvanizing

A zinc coating applied by hot dipping or electroplating that protects steel sacrificially, corroding in place of the base metal. It survives scratches far better than paint, which fails locally once breached.

Ground anchor Security

Also called: floor anchor, shackle anchor

A hardened loop bolted or resin-fixed into a floor or vehicle deck so a box or chain can be secured to the structure. Without one, a portable box is only as secure as its own weight.

Gull wing lid Truck and jobsite

Also called: double lid, butterfly lid

A crossover box lid split down the centerline, hinged at each outer edge so either side opens independently. It gives access from either side of the truck without walking around.

H

Hand-carry box Portable boxes and bags

Also called: portable tool box, carry box

A single-compartment box with a fixed handle, sized to be carried loaded in one hand. Latch style, hinge type and gasket presence separate a jobsite grade box from a hardware store one.

HDPE Materials

Also called: high density polyethylene

A tough, chemically resistant thermoplastic used for molded bag bases, box bodies and liners. It resists solvents and impact well but is hard to bond and creeps under sustained load.

Hydrostatic head Materials

Also called: water column, HH rating

The height of a water column in millimetres a fabric holds before leaking, measured by ISO 811 or a similar method. Around 1,500 mm counts as waterproof, but seams and zips usually leak first.

I

IEC 60529 Standards

Also called: ingress protection standard

The international standard defining the IP code, its test methods and its digit meanings. It specifies exactly how dust and water tests are run, which is why an untested marketing claim of waterproof means nothing.

Impact copolymer Materials

Also called: polypropylene copolymer, PP copolymer

A polypropylene grade with a rubber phase blended in, raising impact strength at low temperature. It is the usual body material for jobsite boxes, which must survive a drop on a cold morning.

Interlock cleat Modular systems

Also called: stacking cleat, locating rib

The molded rib or hook on a box lid that mates with a recess in the base of the box above. Cleats locate the stack before the latches take load, and worn cleats let a stack rock in transit.

Intermediate chest Chests and cabinets

Also called: middle chest, mid box

A drawer unit stacked between a roller cabinet and a top chest to add capacity without raising the top chest out of reach. It usually matches the cabinet width and has no lid of its own.

IP rating Standards

Also called: ingress protection rating, IP code

A two-digit code from IEC 60529 stating protection against solids and liquids. The first digit runs 0 to 6 for dust, the second 0 to 9 for water, so IP65 means dust tight and protected against water jets.

J

Jobsite box Truck and jobsite

Also called: gang box, site box

A large steel chest left on site to hold shared tools and materials overnight. Weight, an anti-pry lip, shrouded hasps and a ground anchor point matter more than any lock rating.

K

Kaizen foam Organization

Also called: layered foam, peel away foam

Cross-linked polyethylene foam supplied in sheets scored into thin laminated layers. You cut an outline, then peel layers to the depth you need, so one block produces a fitted pocket without a router or hot wire.

Keyed alike Security

Also called: KA, common keying

A group of locks cut to open with the same key. It is convenient across a fleet or a stack of boxes, but one lost key compromises everything in the group at once.

L

L-BOXX Modular systems

Also called: LBOXX, Sortimo L-BOXX

A Sortimo modular case system licensed to Bosch and others, named by nominal height in millimetres. It couples front to back with sliding latches and integrates with Sortimo van racking.

Locking bar Security

Also called: gang lock bar, drawer lock bar

A vertical bar inside a cabinet that engages every drawer at once when the lock turns. It is why a single failed cam can leave an entire chest either open or permanently shut.

Low profile box Truck and jobsite

Also called: slim line box, low pro

A crossover box built with reduced height above the bed rail so it clears a rear window or sits under a cover. Lower profile means less volume, so measure interior depth before buying.

M

Magnetic tray Organization

Also called: magnetic parts tray, mag tray

A shallow steel dish with magnets in its base, used to hold fasteners during disassembly. Convenient, but magnetizing screwdriver tips and small parts can cause problems near sensors and electronics.

MAKPAC Modular systems

Also called: Makita MAKPAC, interlocking case

Makita's stacking case system, sold as numbered Types that all share a 395 by 295 mm footprint and differ only in height. Cases couple with rotating side clips rather than a single central latch.

Master keying Security

Also called: master key system

A keying scheme where each lock has its own change key while a master key opens all of them. Adding master pins creates extra shear lines, which measurably lowers the pick resistance of every lock in the system.

Modular stacking system Modular systems

Also called: modular box system, stacking system

A family of boxes, organizers and carts that share one footprint and one coupling method, so any unit will lock to any other. Buying into one is a long commitment because cross-brand mixing is limited.

Molded base Portable boxes and bags

Also called: hard base, tub base

A rigid injection molded or thermoformed bottom bonded to a fabric bag. It stops water wicking up through the fabric, resists abrasion on concrete, and keeps the bag standing open when set down.

Mounting plate Modular systems

Also called: van plate, wall mount plate

A rigid panel carrying a system's coupling geometry, bolted to a van wall, bulkhead or shop wall so boxes latch directly to the structure. It converts a stacking system into fixed racking.

MSG gauge Materials

Also called: Manufacturers Standard Gauge, MSG

The Manufacturers Standard Gauge for sheet steel, the reference table most tool box makers use. It ties each gauge number to a nominal weight per square foot and thus a thickness, before any coating.

N

NIOSH lifting equation Standards

Also called: revised NIOSH lifting equation, RNLE

A model from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health that computes a safe two-handed lifting limit from load position, travel, frequency, asymmetry and grip quality. It is the basis for judging a loaded tool bag.

O

Open cell foam Organization

Also called: absorbent foam, reticulated foam

Foam whose cells interconnect, letting air and liquid pass through. It is soft and cheap but holds solvent and water, so it belongs in packaging rather than in a drawer that sees oily tools.

Open top tool bag Portable boxes and bags

Also called: open tote bag, carpenter bag

A fabric bag with no lid, exterior pockets around a single deep main cavity, and a bar or web handle. It is the fastest bag to work out of and the worst at keeping rain and dust out.

Over-travel slide Chests and cabinets

Also called: over-extension slide

A slide that pushes the drawer box past flush with the cabinet front, usually by one to two inches. It buys clearance for a top chest lid or overhanging work surface but increases leverage on the slide members.

Overhead rack Shop storage

Also called: ceiling rack, overhead storage

A platform suspended from ceiling joists for long-term storage. Rated capacity assumes evenly spread load and correct joist fixing, and the real risk is people loading it faster than they check the fixings.

P

Packout Modular systems

Also called: Milwaukee Packout

Milwaukee's modular storage system, built around a 22 by 16 inch class footprint with side latches and a rolling base. It spans boxes, organizers, crates, coolers, bags, racking and van mounting plates.

Payload Truck and jobsite

Also called: payload capacity, rated payload

The mass a vehicle may carry, equal to gross vehicle weight rating minus curb weight. Tool box empty weight, contents, passengers and fuel all come out of this single number.

Pegboard Shop storage

Also called: perfboard, hardboard panel

A perforated hardboard or steel panel taking hooks on a fixed hole pitch, usually one inch or one quarter inch. Hardboard pegboard fails by tearing around a hole long before the hook bends.

Piano hinge Truck and jobsite

Also called: continuous hinge

A hinge running the full length of a lid, spreading load along the whole joint instead of at two or three knuckles. It resists prying far better than butt hinges and rarely sags.

Pin tumbler lock Security

Also called: Yale lock, pin cylinder

A cylinder lock with stacked driver and key pins that align at a shear line when the correct key is inserted. Security depends on pin count, tolerances and anti-pick pin shapes, not on the format itself.

Powder coating Materials

Also called: powder coat, electrostatic coating

A finish applied as dry charged powder then fused in an oven. It gives a thick, tough film without solvents, but it hides poor surface preparation, and edges and welds remain the first place rust appears.

Puck lock Security

Also called: hockey puck lock, shackleless padlock

A round padlock with no exposed shackle, locking into a matching hasp so only the smooth body is accessible. It defeats bolt cutters entirely and resists hammering better than a shrouded shackle.

Pull-out strength Shop storage

Also called: withdrawal strength, tensile fixing capacity

The axial force needed to pull a fastener out of its substrate. It is the governing failure mode for anything cantilevered off a wall, and it drops sharply in drywall, particleboard and end grain.

R

Recommended weight limit Standards

Also called: RWL

The output of the NIOSH lifting equation: the load most healthy workers can lift repeatedly under the given conditions without raised injury risk. It starts at 51 lb and is reduced by every unfavourable factor.

Relative humidity Materials

Also called: RH

The amount of water vapor in air as a percentage of what that air could hold at its current temperature. Steel corrosion accelerates sharply above roughly 50 to 60 percent, which is the number to control in a shop.

Rigid caster Chests and cabinets

Also called: fixed caster

A caster whose fork is fixed to the mounting plate so the wheel tracks in one direction only. Paired with swivel casters at the other end, it gives a cabinet straight-line tracking and predictable steering.

Ripstop weave Materials

Also called: ripstop

A weave with heavier reinforcing yarns on a grid, typically every 5 to 8 mm, so a tear stops at the next grid line. It adds tear resistance at low weight without much added abrasion resistance.

Riser Modular systems

Also called: spacer, adapter plate

A shallow frame or plate that raises one box off another, either to clear a handle or to adapt one system's footprint to another. Risers add stack height and a second set of joints that can loosen.

Roller cabinet Chests and cabinets

Also called: rolling cabinet, roll cab

The wheeled lower unit of a tool storage stack, carrying the deepest drawers and supporting everything above it. Width in inches, drawer count and caster rating are the three specifications that define one.

Roller slide Chests and cabinets

Also called: epoxy slide, ball-and-roller slide

A slide using one or two nylon or steel rollers per side instead of a caged ball train. Quieter and cheaper than ball bearing slides, it carries less load and usually stops short of full extension.

Rolling base Modular systems

Also called: wheeled base, rolling tool box

The wheeled bottom unit of a modular stack, usually with a telescoping handle and larger wheels than a cart. Its published capacity is the load it will carry, not the load its lid will support.

Rotomolding Materials

Also called: rotational molding, roto-molded

A process where powdered resin tumbles inside a heated mould to form a seamless hollow part with uniform thick walls. It is slow and low pressure, which suits large, very tough one-piece boxes.

S

Shadow board Organization

Also called: tool board, silhouette board

A wall or panel marked with painted or printed outlines of each tool in its home position. Originating in lean manufacturing, it turns tool control into a visual check that takes seconds.

Shadow foam Organization

Also called: two-tone foam, shadow board foam

A two-layer foam set with a contrasting base sheet under a cut top sheet, so an empty pocket shows as a bright silhouette. It makes a missing tool visible at a glance during a tool count.

Shear strength Shop storage

Also called: shear capacity

The force needed to cut a fastener across its axis. Loads hanging flat against a wall are mostly shear, which is why a French cleat is more forgiving than a bracket that sticks straight out.

Sheet steel gauge Materials

Also called: gauge, gage

A traditional number describing sheet thickness, where a higher number means thinner steel. Gauge is not a unit, so the same gauge number means different thicknesses for steel, aluminum and stainless.

Shrouded hasp Security

Also called: shielded hasp, hidden shackle hasp

A hasp designed so the padlock shackle sits inside a steel shield, leaving no room for bolt cutter jaws or a pry bar. It is the single most effective upgrade on a jobsite box.

Side locker Chests and cabinets

Also called: side cabinet, side box

A tall narrow cabinet bolted to the end of a roller cabinet, typically holding a mix of shelves, drawers and a hanging area for long tools. It widens the footprint and shifts the loaded center of gravity sideways.

Side mount box Truck and jobsite

Also called: rail box, side rail box

A long narrow box that mounts along one bed rail rather than across the bed. It leaves the bed floor clear for sheet goods but limits what will fit and loads the truck asymmetrically.

Single lid box Truck and jobsite

Also called: one piece lid

A crossover box with one full width lid hinged at the rear. It seals better than a gull wing because it has one gasket line, but it needs clearance behind the cab and reach from one side.

Slatwall Shop storage

Also called: slat panel, slotted wall panel

A panel with continuous horizontal T-slots that accept hooks, brackets and bins. MDF slatwall needs metal inserts to reach useful load ratings, while extruded aluminum or PVC panels carry more per slot.

Slide load rating Chests and cabinets

Also called: drawer rating, pair rating

The manufacturer's published capacity for a matched pair of slides, measured on a test rig at full extension for a stated cycle count. Real usable load is lower once shock loading and uneven weight distribution are considered.

Socket clip Organization

Also called: ball clip, socket post

The individual spring or detent element that retains one socket on a rail. Clip drive size must match socket drive size, and worn clips drop sockets when a drawer is slammed.

Socket rail Organization

Also called: socket holder, clip rail

A metal or plastic strip carrying spring clips or posts that hold sockets in size order. Rails let a whole set lift out together but waste vertical space compared with a flat tray.

Socket tray Organization

Also called: socket organizer tray, foam socket tray

A molded or foam tray with recesses sized per socket, keeping the set flat and legible in a shallow drawer. It is more space efficient than a rail but not portable as one piece.

Stack height Modular systems

Also called: stacked height, tower height

The total vertical dimension of a coupled group of boxes, including the rolling base. It governs whether the stack clears a van door aperture and how high the loaded center of gravity ends up.

StackTech Modular systems

Also called: Toughbuilt StackTech

Toughbuilt's modular storage system, using a self-aligning top and quick release steel accessory rails. Boxes share a 21 by 16 inch class footprint with half-width compact units that pair to fill it.

Stake pocket Truck and jobsite

Also called: pocket, rail pocket

A rectangular slot in the top of a pickup bed rail, originally for stake sides. Many truck box mounts and racks anchor into these pockets instead of drilling the rail.

Standoff Shop storage

Also called: spacer block, pegboard spacer

The gap held between pegboard and the wall behind it so hook tails can rotate into the holes. Without at least a half inch standoff, standard hooks will not seat.

Static load Standards

Also called: dead load

A load applied steadily without motion, such as a stack sitting on a lid. Published capacities for lids, shelves and casters are usually static figures, measured with the load placed gently and left in place.

Structural foam molding Materials

Also called: foam molding, structural foam

An injection process where a blowing agent expands the melt, giving thick ribbed walls with a solid skin and a cellular core. It makes stiff, light box bodies with a slightly mottled surface.

Swivel caster Chests and cabinets

Also called: steering caster

A caster whose fork rotates about a vertical kingpin so the wheel trails and steers. Cabinets normally use two swivel and two rigid casters, or four swivel for tight shops that need sideways movement.

Systainer Modular systems

Also called: Systainer3, Tanos Systainer

The Tanos modular case family used by Festool and many other brands. Sizes are named by footprint letter and height in millimetres, so a SYS3 M 237 is a medium footprint box 237 mm tall.

T

T-LOC Modular systems

Also called: T-Loc latch, Tanos T-LOC

The Tanos latch used on Systainer T-LOC and Systainer3 boxes. One quarter turn of a single T-shaped handle opens the lid, closes the lid, or couples the box to the unit below, depending on the detent position.

Three-quarter extension Chests and cabinets

Also called: partial extension

A slide travel class exposing roughly 75 percent of drawer depth, leaving the rear quarter under the cabinet. It is common on budget chests and hides the exact tools most often lost at the back of a drawer.

Tipping moment Chests and cabinets

Also called: overturning moment

The rotational force trying to tip a cabinet, equal to load weight multiplied by its horizontal distance from the tipping edge. Pulling a full extension drawer moves weight outboard and multiplies this moment immediately.

Toggle anchor Shop storage

Also called: toggle bolt, hollow wall anchor

A fastener whose wings spread behind drywall to spread load over a larger area. It multiplies drywall capacity but never approaches a screw into solid framing, and it fails suddenly rather than gradually.

Tonneau cover Truck and jobsite

Also called: bed cover, truck bed cover

A hard or soft cover over the pickup bed. Fitting one alongside a tool box requires either a low profile crossover box or a purpose-made cover cut to the box, and both cost sealing quality.

Tool backpack Portable boxes and bags

Also called: tool rucksack

A tool carrier worn on both shoulders, moving load close to the spine and freeing both hands for ladders. It costs interior access speed and usually holds less than an equivalent open top bag.

Tool bag Portable boxes and bags

Also called: gear bag

A soft-sided carrier built from coated woven fabric over a stiffened base, with pockets sized for hand tools. Fabric denier, base material and stitch density predict service life better than brand or price.

Tool insert Modular systems

Also called: inlay, systainer insert

A molded or die-cut tray sized to hold one specific tool and its accessories inside a modular box. Inserts protect the tool but waste volume, which is why empty boxes and custom foam are popular alternatives.

A maintained record of every tool owned, with identifiers, purchase dates and values. It supports insurance claims, deters internal loss, and is the basis of aviation and medical style tool accountability programs.

Tool roll Portable boxes and bags

Also called: roll-up pouch

A flat fabric or leather sheet with sewn pockets that rolls into a bundle and ties or buckles shut. It is the densest way to carry a graduated set such as wrenches or chisels.

Top chest Chests and cabinets

Also called: tool chest, top box

The lidded upper unit that sits on a roller cabinet or bench, holding shallow drawers for hand tools. Its lid usually locks all drawers at once through a till or gravity latch arrangement.

Total lock caster Chests and cabinets

Also called: dual lock caster, brake caster

A caster with a single pedal that locks both wheel rotation and swivel rotation. Locking only the wheel still lets a loaded cabinet creep sideways, so total lock is what actually holds a stack in place.

Tote tray Portable boxes and bags

Also called: lift-out tray, carry tray

A removable shallow tray that sits in the top of a tool box for small parts and frequently used tools. Lifting it out is the fastest way to get at the bulk storage underneath.

ToughSystem Modular systems

Also called: DeWalt ToughSystem, ToughSystem 2.0

DeWalt's modular jobsite storage line. ToughSystem 2.0 uses a front-mounted auto-connect latch and shares a footprint with the earlier ToughSystem boxes, with a rolling carrier at the base of most stacks.

TPR Materials

Also called: thermoplastic rubber, thermoplastic elastomer

A rubber-like plastic that can be injection molded, used for grips, over-molded corners and drawer liners. Grip and feel depend on its durometer, and some grades soften with prolonged oil contact.

Track wall Shop storage

Also called: rail wall, slotted track

A wall system of horizontal metal rails on which accessories hook and slide. It carries more per fixing than pegboard because the load path goes into a steel rail screwed to studs.

Tubular lock Security

Also called: radial pin lock, ace lock

A lock with pins arranged in a circle around a hollow cylindrical key. Common on tool chests and vending machines, low-pin versions are notoriously quick to open with a self-impressioning tubular pick.

UL 437 Standards

Also called: key lock cylinder standard

The Underwriters Laboratories standard for key locks, requiring a cylinder to resist picking, drilling and forcing for defined times. A UL 437 listed cylinder is a meaningful step above any unrated tubular or wafer lock.

Underbody box Truck and jobsite

Also called: under body toolbox, frame mount box

A steel or aluminum box bolted to the chassis rails beneath a service body or flatbed. It leaves the deck completely clear and is the standard storage on utility trucks and trailers.

Van racking Modular systems

Also called: van shelving, in-vehicle racking

Fixed shelving and rails installed in a work vehicle to carry tools and modular boxes. Racking must be anchored to structural points, because a loose box becomes a projectile in a sudden stop.

Vapor corrosion inhibitor Materials

Also called: VCI, volatile corrosion inhibitor

A chemical that vaporizes inside a closed space and adsorbs onto steel, forming a molecular barrier against moisture. Sold as papers, emitters and foam pads, it protects tools in a shut drawer without oiling them.

W

Wafer lock Security

Also called: disc wafer lock

A lock using flat spring-loaded wafers instead of pin stacks. It is cheap, thin and used in most cabinet cam locks, and it is among the fastest lock types to pick or jiggle open.

Wall stud Shop storage

Also called: stud, framing member

A vertical framing member, normally at 16 or 24 inch centers, that carries wall loads down to the structure. Any heavy shop storage should be fixed into studs rather than into drywall alone.

Weather seal Truck and jobsite

Also called: gasket, lid seal

The compressible strip between lid and body that closes the gap against dust and water. Closed cell foam or extruded rubber seals need matching latch pressure, so a sagging latch defeats a good gasket.

Work surface Chests and cabinets

Also called: worktop, bench top

The top panel of a cabinet or stack, made from steel, stainless, composite or hardwood. Its rated load matters when it doubles as a bench, and its overhang determines whether you can clamp to it.

Wrench organizer Organization

Also called: wrench rack, wrench holder

A rail, clip strip or molded tray that spaces combination wrenches in size order. Vertical rack styles read faster than flat trays but cost drawer height and can rattle in transit.
