Terms of Use

Toolbox Insider publishes engineering reference material about tool storage. It is information, not professional advice, and these terms set out what that distinction means in practice.

Toolbox Insider is an independent reference publication about tool storage and organization. These terms apply to everyone who reads it. If you do not accept them, stop reading and close the page.

What the guides are

Every guide is reference material: specifications explained, standards summarized, arithmetic shown. The method is set out in how we analyze and the rules we hold ourselves to are in editorial standards.

Reference material is not professional advice. We are not your structural engineer, your electrician, your safety officer or your insurer, and reading a guide here does not create any professional relationship.

Specifications change, and ours can be wrong

Manufacturer ratings, part numbers, series names and published standards all change. A figure that was correct when a guide was written may not be correct when you read it. Before you commit money or load to a decision, check the current manufacturer data sheet and the current edition of the relevant standard.

We also make mistakes. When we find one, or you tell us about one, we correct it and say so. That process is described in corrections.

Decisions where being wrong hurts

Parts of this site cover subjects where an error has physical consequences: drawer and shelf load ratings, overhead racks, wall fixings, flammable liquid cabinets, compressed gas cylinder storage, and lithium battery storage temperatures.

For those decisions, the manufacturer's instructions, the applicable standard and your local code take precedence over anything written here, in that order. Where they conflict with us, they are right and we are wrong. If a load path, a fixing or a gas installation is load bearing or life safety relevant, have it specified by someone qualified and insured to do it.

The calculators

The calculators are arithmetic helpers. They show their working so you can check it. They take the numbers you type in, and they cannot know your cabinet, your wall, your floor or your vehicle. Treat every result as an estimate to sanity check, not a specification to build to.

We link out to manufacturer data sheets, standards bodies and primary sources so you can verify what we say. We do not control those sites and we are not responsible for their content, accuracy or availability.
