Crossover, Side Mount, Chest and Low Profile

Truck tool boxes divide into seven mounting families, and the choice is really a trade between how much flat bed floor you surrender, whether you can reach the contents standing on the ground, and how many pry surfaces the design exposes.

Most buying guides sort truck boxes by shape. Shape is the least useful sorting key, because two boxes with identical outside dimensions can behave completely differently once they are on the truck. Sort them instead by four variables you can actually feel every working day.

The four variables that decide the format

Bed space consumed. Not just footprint. A crossover box sitting on the rails consumes bed length (typically 18 to 21 in, or 457 to 533 mm, of the front of the bed) but leaves the floor under it usable for flat cargo, so on paper it costs you more than it does in practice. A chest box consumes floor you cannot stack over. An underbody box consumes nothing.

Reach from the ground versus over the rail. This is the variable that separates people who love their box from people who resent it. A crossover box on a 4x4 with a lift is a shoulder-height reach over a rail. A side mount box opens outward toward you at chest height. A drawer system slides the contents out to you.

Security profile. The lock is almost never the weak point. What matters is the length of unsupported lid edge, the hinge type, the gap between lid and tub, and whether the box is bolted through the bed or clamped to the rails.

Mass and where it sits. Every pound of box is a pound off payload, and its position relative to the rear axle changes the axle loads by more or less than its own weight. That arithmetic is in truck box weight, payload and fuel cost.

Crossover and saddle boxes, and their five sub-formats

A crossover box straddles the bed rails immediately behind the cab. "Saddle box" is the older trade term for exactly the same thing; several manufacturers still use both words in one catalog. Mounting is normally J-bolts or clamps hooking under the bed rail lip, sometimes bolt-through with backing plates.

The sub-formats are not marketing. They are five genuinely different tubs.

The deep well variant is the one people underrate. Because the extra volume hangs below the rail line rather than above it, you gain 3 to 5 cubic feet without raising the silhouette or hurting rearward visibility. The cost is that the dropped section blocks the front of the bed floor, so you can no longer slide 8 ft (2.44 m) stock all the way forward on a short bed.

The full size versus slim line distinction is dimensional, not a quality tier. A representative full-size aluminum crossover measures about 72 in wide by 20 in deep by 18 in tall with roughly 11 cubic feet of capacity. Single lid versus gull wing

A single-lid box has one piano-hinged lid spanning the full width, latched at both ends by T-handles linked with a connecting rod. A gull wing box has two lids hinged along the center spine, each opening outward to its own side of the truck.

Gull wing wins on reach. Standing at the driver's side, you open only the driver's-side lid and the contents nearest you are directly under your hand rather than 36 in (914 mm) away across the tub. On a lifted truck that difference is the whole argument.

Gull wing loses on three counts. It doubles the number of latch mechanisms and therefore the number of pry points. It puts a seam down the center of the box, which is a water path and a stress concentration. And each lid is narrower, so the lid panel is stiffer per unit of load but the center spine has to carry the load that a full-width lid would have distributed to both rails.

For a truck that lives outside, a single lid with a full-length stacked and welded piano hinge and a two-point linked latch is the more durable architecture. For a service truck where the operator opens the box forty times a day, gull wing pays for itself in shoulders.

Side mount, rail and wheel well boxes

Side mount / topside boxes sit along the inside of the bed wall, on top of it, or overhanging it, running fore and aft. They typically run 48 to 72 in long, 13 to 18 in tall and 12 to 16 in front to back. They leave the front of the bed completely clear for long stock, which is why they dominate on plumbing and welding trucks that carry pipe.

The trade is that they take a strip of bed floor width. On a full-size truck with roughly 50 to 51 in between the wheel wells, a pair of side mounts can drop the clear floor width below the 48 in you need to lay sheet goods flat. Run one side only, or accept that sheets go on top.

Wheel well boxes are angled tubs that sit over the fender hump. Capacity is small (typically 2 to 5 cubic feet) and the geometry is awkward, but they use dead space and they are reachable from the ground with the tailgate down. Treat them as fast-access storage for straps, chains, fittings and gloves, not as primary storage.

Chest boxes, underbody boxes and in-bed drawer systems

Utility chests sit on the bed floor, usually against the bulkhead. Because the whole box is inside the bed, you can specify one whose overall height clears a tonneau cover (about 16.5 in is the common under-cover height). They are also the only format you can lift out and use as a shop or jobsite chest, which matters for crews that swap trucks. The cost is bed floor you cannot recover.

Underbody boxes bolt to the frame rail between the cab and the rear wheel, or behind it. They are almost always steel, typically 18 in by 18 in by 30 to 48 in, and they consume zero bed space. Two real drawbacks: they hang in the road spray, so corrosion and water ingress are constant, and on a pickup with a factory bed they usually need a mounting bracket kit rather than direct frame holes. Underbody is the default on flatbeds and service bodies for a reason.

In-bed drawer systems and slides replace the bed floor with a deck over one or two full-length drawers. They are the most usable storage per cubic foot in this list, because everything comes out to you at the tailgate instead of you climbing in. Published deck loads are typically in the 1,500 to 2,000 lb (680 to 907 kg) range with roughly 200 lb (91 kg) per drawer, but verify against the exact model. They are also heavy (commonly 200 to 400 lb, 91 to 181 kg, empty) and they raise the bed floor by 8 to 12 in, which costs you rail height for anything piled on top.

Bed slides (a rolling platform with no drawers) are the cheaper cousin: they solve reach without adding enclosed storage or lockable security.

Toppers, canopies and hitch carriers

A topper or canopy converts the whole bed into a dry, lockable volume of 40 to 75 cubic feet. Nothing else in this list comes close on volume per dollar. What it does not give you is compartmentalization or real security: a cab-height fiberglass topper with a lift glass is a 5 minute problem for anyone with a screwdriver, and contents are visible. Aluminum contractor canopies with side access doors and internal shelving are a different animal and price accordingly.

A hitch-mounted carrier is the format of last resort. It adds no bed intrusion and it is cheap, but it puts mass a long way behind the rear axle, it is exposed, and it rarely locks in a way that survives attention. Price bands are broad street ranges as of late 2025 and move with aluminum pricing. Weights are typical published empty weights across mainstream lines, not a single model.

Decision tree

Start with the bed and work outward.

  1. Do you carry stock longer than the bed? If yes, rule out deep well crossovers and in-bed chests at the bulkhead. Go side mount, underbody, or a standard crossover with the floor left clear.
  2. Is the bed 5.5 ft (1.68 m) or shorter? A 5.5 ft bed has roughly 67 in (1702 mm) of floor length. A crossover box takes about 20 in of it and gives the rest back as flat, stackable floor. A chest box takes the same 20 in and never gives it back. Choose crossover.
  3. Is the bed 8 ft (2.44 m)? You have room to run a crossover and a chest or a pair of side mounts. Sequence them: crossover at the bulkhead, side mounts along the walls, floor left clear.

  5. Is the truck lifted, or are you under 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m)? Prefer gull wing, side mount, underbody or a drawer system. A standard crossover on a lifted 3/4 ton is a genuinely bad daily experience.

  7. Is the truck parked on a street or an unfenced yard overnight? Weight the security column hard: bolt-through mounting, a drawer system or a chest, and the layered approach in jobsite box security.
  8. Is payload already tight? Weigh the truck first. A steel crossover plus contents can eat 500 lb (227 kg) of a half-ton's rating.

What people get wrong

Buying capacity instead of access. A 13 cubic foot box you can only reach the near 18 in of is a 6 cubic foot box with a storage problem. Capacity figures are tub volume, not reachable volume.

Assuming a crossover box fits because the bed length fits. The controlling dimension is outside rail-to-rail width at the point where the box lands, and it is the one number almost no manufacturer publishes for your truck. Measure it.

Ignoring the wheel well taper. Modern bed walls are not vertical. A tub that clears at the rail can foul 8 in lower down.

Forgetting the tailgate. Some deep well and chest formats interfere with tailgate-mounted steps, bed extenders and factory ramps. Open everything before you drill.

What is the difference between a crossover box and a saddle box?

Nothing. Saddle box is the older trade term for a box that straddles the bed rails behind the cab, and crossover is the current retail term. Some manufacturers still label the same product both ways in the same catalog.

Will a low profile box fit under my tonneau cover?

Not usually. Low profile means roughly 13 in tall and sitting about 3 in above the bed rail, which is still above a cover. What fits under a cover is an in-bed utility chest of about 16.5 in overall height, or a cover sold specifically as toolbox compatible.

Do I need a crossover box or a chest box for a short bed?
