There is no standards body governing tool chest sizes. The common widths (26, 41, 46, 52, 55 or 56, 60 and 72 in) exist because one manufacturer picked them and everyone else matched so that accessories, top chests and side lockers would interchange. What each number measures varies by brand.
What the nominal width actually measures
Three conventions are in circulation:
- Body width. The steel shell, excluding side handles, bumpers, and any bolt-on power center. This is the most common convention and it is why a "41 in" cabinet often needs 43 to 44 in of wall.
- Overall width. Everything, including protrusions. Cabinets published as 56-3/4 in or 44-1/4 in are quoting overall.
- Rounded nominal. A marketing number that sits near, but not on, either measurement. A cabinet sold as 55 in and another sold as 56 in are frequently the same class of box.
The practical consequence: when you are fitting a box into a defined space, ignore the name on the label. Find the published overall width, add 1 in for handles if the spec is ambiguous, and add clearance on both sides.

Weights are broad bands because construction varies enormously across tiers. Use them for logistics planning (can two people move this?) rather than as a quality signal.
Depth classes, and why depth matters more than width

Depth is undervalued because it does not change the wall space the box consumes. Going from 18 in to 22 in depth increases every drawer's floor area by roughly 22 percent, and drawer volume with it, while the cabinet still occupies the same width along the wall.
The cost is entirely in front of the box. A full extension drawer in a 22 in deep cabinet projects about 20 in past the cabinet face. In a 24 in cabinet it projects about 22 in. That extra 2 in comes directly out of your aisle.
Height classes and the stack
Tool storage heights break into four groups:
- Roller cabinet body: typically 33 to 40 in tall, excluding casters.
- Casters: add 4 to 7 in depending on wheel diameter. A 6 in caster package adds roughly 7 in with the plate.
- Overall roller cabinet height: commonly 40 to 46 in. Published examples land near 43-3/4 in for a 56 in class cabinet on 6 in casters.
- Top chest: typically 17 to 26 in tall.
Stack a top chest on a roller cabinet and the combined height lands between 60 and 72 in (1524 to 1829 mm). That has three consequences worth planning for:
- The top drawer of the top chest is at or above shoulder height for many people. Anything above about 60 in is reach-only storage and a poor place for heavy items. See top chest vs roller cabinet vs side locker for how to divide contents between the two.
- The stack raises the center of gravity substantially, which reduces the deceleration needed to tip the assembly. That interacts directly with the caster and floor discussion in casters and mobility on roller cabinets.
- The roller cabinet work top is not a workbench height. At 39 to 44 in it is well above the 34 to 36 in standard bench height. It suits standing detail work and parts staging, and it is too high for anything requiring you to lean into the work.
Drawer count is a configuration choice, not a size
Two 46 in cabinets with the same shell can ship with 8 drawers or 18. More drawers is not automatically better.
- Fewer, deeper drawers: better for bulky items, power tools in cases, and large impact sockets. Worse for finding things, because contents stack vertically and hide each other.
- More, shallower drawers: better for single-layer organization and foam layouts, which is the entire premise of a disciplined drawer layout. Costs vertical space to slide hardware and drawer front returns.
The hidden cost of drawer count is steel and slide overhead. Each additional drawer adds two drawer front returns, two slide pairs and a slide gap, so an 18 drawer cabinet has meaningfully less net internal volume than an 8 drawer cabinet in the same shell. Fitting a box in a single-car garage bay
A typical single bay is about 12 ft (144 in) wide by 20 to 22 ft deep, and a standard single garage door opening is 8 to 9 ft wide.
Run your own bay through the tool box fit and clearance planner, and treat the result as one input to a wider garage shop layout rather than a standalone answer.
Aisle and swing clearance rules

Drawer projection, in practice, is roughly the cabinet depth minus 2 in for full extension slides, or about 75 percent of that for 3/4 extension slides. Getting it into the building and onto a truck
Doorways. The binding dimension is depth, not width. A standard 36 in door slab gives roughly 34 in of clear opening, and a 32 in slab gives roughly 30 in. Every common cabinet depth from 18 to 30 in will pass through a 34 in clear opening if you take it in end-first. What will not pass is a stacked combo taken in as a unit, so plan to separate the top chest.
Corners and stairs. The diagonal of the cabinet in plan view is what has to swing around a corner. For a 41 in x 22 in cabinet that diagonal is about 46.5 in. Measure the hallway width at the turn, not just the door.
Ceiling and door head height. Overall cabinet heights of 40 to 46 in clear any door head. A stacked combo at 60 to 72 in still clears a standard 80 in door, but not a low basement soffit.
Pickup beds. Bed width between the wheel wells varies widely, commonly falling in the 44 to 51 in band on modern full-size trucks and narrower on mid-size. A 41 in cabinet loaded across the bed usually fits between the wells. A 52 in or wider cabinet almost never does, and has to ride on the wheel wells or lengthwise on the bed floor. Loading height and weight. Tailgate heights on pickups commonly sit in the 28 to 36 in band. A 41 in cabinet at 250 lb empty is a three-person lift or a ramp job. A 72 in cabinet at 700 lb needs a liftgate, a forklift, or a moving company. Never load a cabinet with the drawers full.
Restraint. Once it is in the vehicle, straps carry the load, not the casters. Caster brakes are a parking aid, and they do not resist forward deceleration.
